Formerly known as Franciscan Alliance, Franciscan Health was founded in 1875 by Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel and the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. After founding their first hospital, the Sisters expanded their services to orphanages, schools, and homes for the elderly.  Over 140 years after its founding, the faith-based organization now operates 14 hospitals across Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

St. Elizabeth Hospital, now Franciscan Health Lafayette Central in Lafayette, was the first facility founded by the sisters in America. Franciscan Health provides a broad, coordinated continuum of health care services with an emphasis on improving the health of persons and communities, treating the mind, body and spirit with holistic and comprehensive medical options, developing creative structures for health care delivery, and being advocates for those in need.
